How to Display Your 3D Printed Pokémon Collection Like a Pro

You've built an impressive collection of 3D printed Pokémon collectibles — now what? Display is everything. A beautifully printed piece deserves a setup that shows it off properly. Whether you're working with a single shelf, a dedicated display cabinet, or an entire gaming room build-out, here's how to display your 3D printed Pokémon collection like a pro.

The Three Rules of Collecting Display

Before we get into specific setups, three principles apply to every great display regardless of budget:

  1. Consistency creates impact. A collection that shares a common display style looks intentional, not chaotic. Pick a theme (generation, type, color palette) and build from there.
  2. Lighting changes everything. Even mediocre pieces look great under good lighting. Great pieces look spectacular.
  3. Height variation adds depth. Flat rows of same-sized items are boring. Use stands, risers, and varying piece heights to create visual interest.

Shelf Display: The Classic Approach

For most collectors, floating shelves or bookcase shelves are the entry point. Here's how to make them look great:

Depth Stacking

  • IKEA Detolf — The collector's classic. Narrow glass column cabinet, perfect for a curated row of statues or Pokéball collections. Add an LED strip light kit for a huge visual upgrade. About $70 new.
  • IKEA Billy/Oxberg — Wider bookcase with optional glass doors. Works well for larger collections. Add internal LED lighting for best effect.
  • Detachable wall-mount display cases — These are great for Pokéballs specifically. You can mount rows of small display shelves at eye level and angle them forward slightly so the Pokéball designs are face-on.

Cabinet Lighting

Internal cabinet lighting is the single biggest upgrade you can make for display impact. Options:

  • LED strip lights — Stick to the top/sides of cabinet interior, warm white (2700–3000K) for natural-looking display, cool white (5000K+) for a gallery/showcase feel
  • Puck lights — Battery-operated, stick on interior top corners, zero wiring required
  • Smart LED strips (Govee/Philips Hue) — RGB color options let you match lighting to the dominant colors of your collection

Generation-Organized Display

Protecting Your Display Pieces

3D printed PLA+ pieces are durable but benefit from basic care:

  • Avoid direct sunlight — extended UV exposure can cause slight yellowing and color fade over years
  • Keep away from heat sources — PLA softens around 60°C, so never place near radiators or in direct summer sunlight through windows
  • Dust with a soft brush — avoid chemical cleaners on printed surfaces
  • Display away from pet reach — this one should be obvious, but PLA smells appealing to dogs

Photography for Your Collection

Once your display is set up, you'll want to photograph it. Quick tips:

  • Use a consistent background — black, white, or a light grey shows 3D prints most cleanly
  • Photograph at eye level to the piece, not looking down from above
  • Natural window light (diffused, not direct) beats most artificial setups for color accuracy
  • Shoot in portrait orientation for single pieces, landscape for display setups
