The Beginner's Guide to 3D Print Settings for Collectibles (Layer Height, Speed & More)

Getting into 3D printing is exciting — until your first few prints come out stringy, warped, or with layers that look like they belong on a parking garage rather than a display shelf. The gap between "prints that work" and "prints that look great" almost entirely comes down to settings.

This guide covers the core print settings that matter most for collectibles and decorative pieces, explained in plain language without assuming you've read a textbook.

The Settings That Matter Most (In Order of Impact)

1. Layer Height — The Single Biggest Quality Lever

Layer height is how thick each layer of plastic is as it's deposited. Lower layer height = more layers = smoother surface but longer print time.

  • 0.05–0.10mm — Ultra fine. For display pieces where surface quality is paramount. Print times will be 2–4x longer.
  • 0.12–0.16mm — Sweet spot for collectibles. Excellent surface quality at a reasonable print time. This is what we use for most of our pieces.
  • 0.20mm — Standard. Fine for prototypes, functional parts, and anything that won't be viewed up close.
  • 0.28–0.32mm — Draft mode. Fast but noticeably layered surface. Good for test fits, not display pieces.

Rule of thumb: Use 0.12mm or 0.16mm for display pieces. Use 0.20mm for everything else.

2. Wall Count (Perimeters) — Strength and Surface Quality

Walls are the outer shells of your print. More walls = stronger part, better surface quality, and less visible infill pattern through thin walls.

  • 2 walls — Minimum for basic prints. You'll often see infill pattern through the surface on thin pieces.
  • 3–4 walls — Standard for most collectible prints. Good balance of strength and print time.
  • 5–6 walls — High strength, used for mechanical parts like Pokéball mechanisms, or anywhere you need durability.

Pro tip: If a print looks like it has a honeycomb pattern showing through the surface, increase wall count before adjusting anything else.

3. Infill Percentage and Pattern

Infill is the internal structure inside your print. It's not visible from the outside but affects weight, strength, and how well the top surface closes.

  • 10–15% — Fine for most decorative display pieces. Light and fast.
  • 20–30% — Standard all-purpose. Good for functional pieces and anything that needs to handle some stress.
  • 40%+ — High strength. Use for Pokéball mechanisms, hinges, clasps, or anything structural.

For infill pattern: Gyroid is the best general-purpose pattern for strength, lightning pattern prints fastest, and rectilinear/grid is fine for most decorative work.

4. Print Temperature

Getting temperature right prevents stringing (thin plastic threads between features), under-extrusion (gaps in layers), and poor layer adhesion.

For PLA+, start at the manufacturer's recommended range (usually 210–225°C) and adjust up if you see under-extrusion or down if you see stringing. Most PLA+ runs best at 215–220°C.

  • Too hot: Stringing, blobbing, overhangs sag
  • Too cold: Poor layer bonding, brittle parts, rough surface

5. Print Speed — Slow Down for Quality

Faster is not better for display-quality prints. Speed has a direct impact on surface quality, especially on curved surfaces and fine details.

  • Outer walls: 40–60mm/s for quality. This is where you spend the extra time budget.
  • Inner walls/infill: 80–120mm/s is fine. These are hidden.
  • Travel: As fast as your printer will go. Travel isn't printing.

If you have a Bambu Lab printer, the "Quality" preset already handles this intelligently. On other printers, manually set perimeter speed lower than infill speed.

6. Top/Bottom Layers

The flat top and bottom surfaces of your print are created by the top/bottom layer count. For display pieces, more top layers = smoother, more closed-looking top surface.

  • 3 top layers: Minimum. You'll often see infill showing through.
  • 5 top layers: Standard and reliable. Most display pieces look great at 5.
  • 7+ top layers: For demanding top surfaces, like the flat faces of HueForge pieces.

7. Enable Ironing for Flat Tops

Ironing is a finishing pass your printer makes over the top surface, re-melting it slightly for a smoother finish. The result on flat surfaces is remarkably clean. Enable ironing for any print where the top surface is a primary display face. The time cost is minimal (1–3 minutes per print) for a meaningful quality gain.

Slicer Software: Which to Use

Your slicer software converts a 3D model into printer instructions. The most popular options:

  • Bambu Studio — Best if you have a Bambu Lab printer. Excellent presets, easy multi-color setup.
  • OrcaSlicer — Open-source, based on Bambu Studio, works with most printers. Best all-around choice for non-Bambu printers.
  • PrusaSlicer — Excellent for Prusa printers, also works with others. Very robust feature set.
  • Cura — Most widely used. Huge plugin library but slightly behind OrcaSlicer/PrusaSlicer in preset quality.

The Most Common Beginner Mistakes

  1. Printing too fast — Slow down your outer walls. This single change improves most beginner print quality by 30%.
  2. Skipping bed calibration — A poorly calibrated first layer causes everything downstream to be worse. Calibrate before every major print session.
  3. Ignoring supports — Most complex geometry needs supports. Learn how support settings work in your slicer early.
  4. Wrong layer height for the model — Very small models need finer layer heights to look good. Scale up your models or reduce layer height.
  5. Using old or wet filament — Filament absorbs moisture over time and prints poorly. Store in sealed containers with desiccant.

Putting It All Together

For our collectible display prints, a typical settings profile looks like: 0.16mm layer height, 4 walls, 20% gyroid infill, 5 top/bottom layers, ironing enabled, 50mm/s outer wall speed, 215°C PLA+. This produces excellent results across a wide range of models.
